Dr. Covington’s innovative, evidence-based 12 session manualized curriculum incorporates the insights of neuroscience with the latest understanding of trauma and PTSD. Space will be limited for this interactive virtual training.
While research and clinical experience indicate a high incidence of trauma and co-occurring disorders in women’s lives, counselors and clinicians often struggle with the realities of providing treatment. This 4-day virtual training is based on the evidence-based treatment curriculum, Beyond Trauma: A Healing Journey for Women. This twelve-session intervention is designed for use in outpatient, residential, and criminal justice settings. Cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness, body-focused exercises, expressive arts, and the principles of relational therapy are integrated in this strength-based approach. The curriculum also has a psycho-educational component that teaches women what trauma is, its process, and its impact on both the inner self (thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values) and the outer self (behavior and relationships, including parenting). This training includes demonstration of techniques that counselors can use to help clients develop coping skills, as well as emotional wellness. The newly revised six session Healing Trauma+ intervention is also discussed with suggestions and recommendations for a non-binary, more expansive use of language.
This training is conducted by our Certified Trainer, Carol Ackley, LADC, retired Executive Director of River Ridge Treatment Center (2000-2015) who developed and implemented gender-responsive, trauma-informed, co-occurring treatment services in the Twin Cities Metropolitan area. Throughout this interactive training, your trainer also discusses how the treatment program materials can be used with women in the criminal justice system.

However, we suggest that each person attending the training obtain a copy of the Participant's Workbook to view during the training to enhance your learning experience. Those leading groups after the training will also want a copy of the Facilitator's Guide (which includes a workbook). You can obtain materials from either the publisher or Covington Books.
The facilitator’s manual is a step-by-step guide containing the theory, structure, and content needed for running groups. A Healing Journey, the participant’s journal, allows women to process and record the therapeutic experience. There are also optional DVDs for the Facilitator and for Clients. The materials are designed to be user-friendly and self-instructive. This allows the Beyond Trauma program to be implemented by a staff with a wide range of training and experience.
