A Brief Intervention for Women and Gender-Diverse People
Dr. Covington and Ms. Russo's innovative program Healing Trauma+ is a short 6-session evidence-based intervention designed for cisgender women, transgender people, and those who are nonbinary or gender fluid and have experienced a wide variety of traumatic experiences – particularly relational abuse. Space will be limited for this interactive virtual training.
This interactive training presents an updated, six-session trauma curriculum entitled Healing Trauma+: A Brief Intervention for Women and Gender-Diverse People. Over the years, the understanding of gender has shifted from the binary male-female model to a more inclusive and expansive model. In order to reflect these changes, the evidence-based Healing Trauma program has been issued in an updated, third edition with an expanded definition of “gender responsive” that includes the experiences of transgender and nonbinary people.
The focus is on the core things that both staff members and clients need: an understanding of what trauma is, its process, and its impact on both the inner self (thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values) and the outer self (behavior and relationships). Program topics include: the process of trauma, power and abuse, the intersection of trauma and SUDs, grounding and self-soothing techniques, and healthy relationships. Healing Trauma+ includes cognitive-behavioral therapeutic strategies, mindfulness, guided imagery, and expressive arts. It is particularly designed for settings that require a shorter intervention, such as jails, domestic violence agencies, sexual assault services, and short-term addiction treatment. The program materials consist of a facilitator guide and participant workbook, both of which are on a flash drive to allow for easy duplication. The workbook is written in both English and Spanish.
This training is conducted by our Certified Trainer, Amy Myers, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Social Work at the Yale Child Study Center. Throughout this interactive training she will discuss how the treatment program materials can be used with women in the criminal justice system.

However, we suggest that each person attending the training obtain a copy of the Participant's Workbook to view during the training to enhance your learning experience. Those leading groups after the training will also want a copy of the Facilitator's Guide. You can obtain materials on the flash drive directly from either the publisher or Covington Books. Upon receipt, you can duplicate as many Facilitator Guides and Participant's Workbooks as you need from the flash drive for staff and participants.
The facilitator’s manual is a step-by-step guide containing the theory, structure, and content needed for running groups. The participant’s workbook allows women to process and record the therapeutic experience. The materials are designed to be user-friendly and self-instructive. This allows the Healing Trauma+ program to be implemented by staff with a wide range of training and experience.
