A Young Man's Guide to Self-Mastery

Open Enrollment Virtual Training Opportunity

This innovative, evidence-based 14 session manualized curriculum is designed for working with adolescents and transitional age youth (TAY) who have a masculine experience of the world. Space will be limited for this interactive virtual training.

A Young Man’s Guide to Self-Mastery is an invaluable resource for practitioners in mental health clinics, juvenile justice facilities, and residential and outpatient facilities. This is designed for a wide range of gender-expansive youth, including those who are transgender or nonbinary. It is a trauma-informed, gender-responsive treatment program that addresses the impacts of socialization and adverse (traumatic) life experiences and how these contribute to impaired critical thinking, trouble in dealing with emotions, antisocial behavior, and substance misuse. This 14-session program helps participants to understand the effects of adversity and trauma in their lives, develop healthy senses of themselves, understand their emotions, increase their communication skills, better understand their sexual and gender identities, and build healthy relationships. It incorporates grounding techniques, experiential learning activities, discussion groups, and written assignments in an atmosphere of safety and of mutual learning. The comprehensive facilitator’s guide explains the theoretical foundation and real-life connection between trauma and substance use, and provides clear guidelines and strategies for conducting the program.

This training is conducted by our Certified Trainers Rick Dauer, LADC, co-author of Helping Men Recover, retired Clinical Director of River Ridge Treatment Center and now an independent behavioral health consultant and trainer and Shane Pugh, BA, LADC, a licensed alcohol and drug counselor who works at Pride Institute IOP in Saint Paul, Minnesota and co-author of Exploring Trauma+.  Throughout this interactive training, they will also discuss how the treatment program materials can be used with those in the criminal justice system.
